Demre Myra Kekova Tour From Side – Unveiling Ancient Mysteries ⛵🏛️
Embark on a captivating journey with us to explore the fascinating world of ancient Christian shrines and enigmatic antiquity. Our adventure begins with a visit to the remnants of the ancient Lycian city, Myra, nestled near the modern town of Demre. Myra holds a sacred significance as a place of pilgrimage and profound faith, a city where Saint Nicholas himself lived and preached. Its origins date back to antiquity, with inscriptions tracing its existence to the fifth century BC.
Once the grand capital of Lycia, Myra showcases its historical grandeur through well-preserved ruins. Notably, the Church of St. Nicholas stands as a testament to Byzantine architectural prowess in the East. Inside its walls, intricate icons, frescoes, mosaic floors, and a sarcophagus narrate tales of devotion. While the revered relics of Saint Nicholas have long since been transported to Bari, Italy, the church still serves as a museum, offering a glimpse into its sacred history. Every December 6th, thousands of Christian pilgrims assemble here to honor Saint Nicholas on his feast day.
Perched atop the surrounding cliffs, a necropolis housing Lycian rock tombs echoes the belief of ascending to paradise by being laid to rest closer to the heavens. Nearby, a grand Greco-Roman amphitheater – capable of hosting up to 10,000 attendees – resonates with echoes of ancient performances, public trials, and dramatic gladiatorial duels.
A highlight of our journey is a yacht voyage to the sunken cities of Kekova Island, an extraordinary panorama of ancient history. As you sail along the crystal waters, remnants of four ancient cities – Teimussa, Dolihiste, Aperlai, and Simena – emerge from the depths, a testament to a forgotten world waiting to be explored.
